Rien van der Schaft's
Training Method

Rien’s training method is an easy-to-follow and step-by-step training method based on the classical principles.

Rien van der Schaft’s training method is based on the classical principles of having the right basics established and riding your horse from back to front.

When you have a good foundation, you can start working on influencing the balance of your horse.

Not only the front-back balance by trying to transfer weight from the front legs to the hindquarters, but also the left-right balance.

However, a lot of riders struggle with this and experience problems like their horse becoming tight in the body, heavier on one rein, getting tension, losing impulsion and coming against the bit.

In 99% of all the cases ...

As a result, your horse will become tight in his body and risks getting injuries.

With RS Riding you get the help you need to make sure you have the fundamentals in place.

That way you can reach the highest level in a correct and friendly way, based on classical principles.

In the training, we distinguish several phases of balance ...

and it’s important to understand how you go through these phases to eventually achieve collection.

Going through these phases shouldn’t involve tension, a horse getting tight, stopping or even rearing.

It also doesn’t involve your horse wanting to come against the bit or not wanting to work with you.

When you’ve prepared your horse in the right way, going through these phases will feel like a natural process for both you and your horse.

A process you both will enjoy.

That doesn’t mean you don’t train your horse or your horse doesn’t have to work hard.

Remember your horse needs to be an athlete in order to achieve collection, but the process should be pleasant for your horse.

And that only be the case when you let the activity flow through your horse’s body from back to front.

That means that you don’t ride your horse backwards and force a certain frame.

Especially not a frame with your horse being behind the vertical and not wanting to follow your hands in a forward-down direction.

this has to do with not having the basic principles established ánd not being taught how to influence the balance in the right way.

More specifically, we often focus on trying to make a certain frame, but the frame is the result of your horse’s balance. And not the other way around.
